There are a few reasons why your air conditioner smells

It is cooling in your home, but strange smells are coming from the vents and air conditioning unit. Your AC unit may be malfunctioning and causing this strange smell. It could be dangerous for your health. There could be many reasons your AC smells. Do not panic! Washington HVAC Bosss will diagnose and help you with all of these issues.

It is possible to be worried if there is a burning sensation in your home. If the burning sensation does not go away, it could simply be dust that has burned off. If the smell persists, it may be due to a broken capacitor or overheating of the motor. A capacitor powers the engine and, if it isn't working properly, it can heat up. It is possible that the motor is heating up and the bearings may have worn. Regularly changing the air filter will reduce the airflow which could cause electrical components to heat up. Other issues include problems with the AC fan or compressor, as well as the circuit board. You should also make sure that your AC is turned off at the breaker.

Do you detect acetone (what nail varnish remover smells like?)? If you do, it could be a refrigerant leak. AC coil cracks and holes can occur if the unit isn't maintained regularly. This problem can lead to a decrease in AC unit performance and could pose a health risk.

Are you overwhelmed by the smell of rotten things? It could be dead animals like rodents or birds, as well as lizards. These animals are trapped inside the AC ducts and cannot escape. The smell of decaying animals can be detected throughout your home, so make sure the AC is on.

Mold growth may be a possibility in the air ducts if the odor is musty. If the moisture inside the unit is not drained, it can build up and cause mold growth. Mold is extremely dangerous. Your air conditioner spreads the mold spores around your home. If this is true, you shouldn't be concerned about the smell.

It is important to not ignore the smell of rotten eggs (sulfur). This could indicate a gas leak. If you detect gas coming through your vents it is best to turn off any electrical devices and not use lighters. Open your windows, get out of your house immediately, and contact your gas company.

As always, we do NOT recommend anyone to repair their AC unit. If you have any unusual odors, please call Washington HVAC Boss (202) 980 8310 or book an appointment via our website. These problems are easily fixed by our experts so that you can return to enjoying your home.
