The 2020 holidays are lacking the usual cheer as people strive to adapt traditions and email their Christmas lists to Santa Claus so he can search the internet for the best deals.
Nearly three-quarters of shoppers surveyed in Channel Factory’s Christmas Season survey said they’ll go online this year to find gifts for loved ones. More than 30% start shopping earlier than usual (as early as October). Only half said they were spending as much as in previous years.
“In crises, decades happen in days, and nowhere has a trend accelerated more than in e-commerce, where online sales rose 43% year over year in September alone,” said Lauren Douglass, svp of Channel Factory, Global Marketing.
Shoppers also rely on connected television like YouTube to find products. 40% said they had discovered something new through ads on the video platform that they could buy. One in three people actively searches for gift ideas (as well as home decor inspiration) on YouTube, and 32% attributed a selection of Christmas gifts to YouTube.
