Epic Games is launching a new social game called Fortnites Spy Within, which is the corporate version of popular treason titles like Werewolves and Unter Uns.
The game is based on the popular Fortnite Creative user-generated map, Spy Within, created by players / developers KKslider and Dolphin Dom. Many gamers may view this as predatory as Epic Games seeks to assert itself on the lawn of Among Us, a popular indie title. But it’s a familiar pattern as Among Us is based on the older Werewovles title, and Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode is based on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds design. Epic’s model is to develop Fortnite to be what it takes to hold onto its users.
While Among Us came out in 2018, it grew in popularity this year after streamers played the simple 2D game. And that inspired KKslider and Dolphin Dom to create a version of the game in Fortnite that includes a section of the map where players can create their own environments for games called Fornite Creative.
In the Fortnite version, players are disguised as characters from Fortnite, the popular battle royale game that has had more than 350 million downloads. Spy Within has two players known as spies who try to eliminate other players in the space station without revealing their identities as spies. You must do this before the rest of the crew (eight other players) do their jobs or vote out the spies.
Gamers can use Houseparty’s new Fortnite video chat feature to meet and find the spy. Spy Within is a new Fortnite limited time event for the holidays. Epic Games acquired Houseparty as a synchronous personal social network with video communication on mobile devices and on the desktop.
