Facebook used its virtual event at the Facebook Communities Summit on Thursday to introduce various new functions for groups on both the administrator and user side.

Admins can also organize content in their groups using hashtags and pin topics at the top of the group to make them stand out for all members.


New ways to stimulate discussion and encourage engagement within a group include chats that can be created and connected in real time.


Prompts are a new type of collaborative post that allows users to share photos on a specific topic and swipe through everyone’s replies.


Administrators can hold text-based question-and-answer sessions that members can easily attend.


Also, users can set custom profile photos for different groups they belong to and customize their profiles to share information relevant to each community.

Facebook will also begin testing new ways that people can discover public groups on and off its platform.

Some users may see related discussions in the news feed when someone posted a link or re-shared a post on the social network so they can see what other groups are saying about the same content.


The Groups tab shows posts from public groups related to people’s interests, as well as popular posts from public groups.


Simo added: “You may see conversations from public groups outside of the Facebook app, such as when browsing the web.”

Public group administrators have the option of whether or not to include their groups in this new experience, and they can enable post approvals for their groups during the sign-up process, for existing members, new members, and non-members.

Simo wrote, “From there, it’s easy to join the conversation without joining the group, as long as the community allows it.
