Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe compete every morning on their FS1 talk show Skip and Shannon: Undisputed, but now they have taken their fight to a new – yet retro – level.
The hosts fight, albeit virtually, in a new FS1 promo that puts them in a classic fighting arcade game like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter.
At the point where undisputed host Jenny Taft also appears as the referee of the fight, Bayless and Sharpe begin their fight on the undisputed set before moving to new locations for later rounds. Among the topics the hosts argue about: Bill Belichick versus Tom Brady (the New England Patriots head coach and former quarterback) and whether Michael Jordan or LeBron James is the GOAT (greatest of all time).
“It was certainly an homage to the great arcade fighting games of the 80s and 90s. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Karate Champ influenced the piece. Skip and Shannon compete on every show so it was a fun and different way to promote undisputed, ”said Bill Battin, SVP, On-Air Marketing at Fox Sports.
Fox Sports has partnered with Jérôme Debève at La Huella FX in Madrid to create the promo that will air on social and digital channels on Thursday and on FS1 in the coming weeks.
While Taft recorded her lines specifically for the promo, the dialogue between Bayless and Sharpe was taken from undisputed sound bits.
Battin said the promo was full of Easter eggs for undisputed fans. At some point, the cowboy fan Bayless Sharpe zaps with a stream of Dallas Cowboys stars and unleashes his “How about the cowboys?” Catchphrase. The spot also shows the dogs of both hosts: Sharpes Pomeranian, Tarzan and Bayless Maltese, Hazel.
Later in the promo, a neon sign that reads “Club Shay Shay” flashes behind Sharpe, originally referring to Sharpe’s man-made VIP clubs for GOATS but now bears the name of his weekly podcast. The goat mask that Sharpe wears every time LeBron James wins a big game appears.
