Twitter has permanently blocked President Donald Trump’s account, the company said on Friday. This is a notable move given growing pressure on the social media network to remove it after the deadly riot at the Capitol earlier this week.

Twitter said it had decided to ban the president “because of the risk of further incitement to violence” after reviewing its recent tweets.
While Twitter has long been criticized for not doing enough to curb the spread of misinformation and hate speech on Trump’s account, the past few days have put pressure on prominent technicians, Democrats, and Twitter’s own staff for a permanent ban.
Up until that point, Twitter had blocked Trump’s account for just 12 hours via tweets saying he “loved” the rioters and the uprising as “the things and events that happen when a holy landslide election victory is so unceremonious and malicious being stripped. ”
After the suspension expired, Trump used Twitter to refer to his supporters as “American patriots”. He said the MAGA movement would have a “HUGE VOICE long in the future” and said he would skip Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Twitter said these tweets sparked the ban because they were interpreted by its followers as a veiled plan to “continue to support, empower and protect those who believe he won the election,” especially given the fact that plans for future armed protests have already increased on and off Twitter. “
President Trump’s statement that he will not attend the inauguration will be received by a number of his supporters as further confirmation that the election was illegitimate and is seen as a rejection of his earlier claim made via two tweets (Jan. , 2) has raised from him Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino said there will be an “orderly transition” on Jan. 20, “Twitter said in its review of its recent tweets.
Trump immediately tweeted from the @ POTUS account that Twitter staff were coordinating with Democrats and the “radical left” to silence him. But moments later, Twitter removed these posts.
Trump’s Twitter account was his primary way of communicating with the world. He has used it to announce guidelines, prosecute critics, spread falsehoods and, most recently, promote conspiracy theories about electoral fraud. But after years of pressure to clean up its platform, this year Twitter began cracking down on Trump by checking false tweets about mail-in-voting, Covid-19, and election results. The company’s actions angered Trump so much that he launched a crusade against Tech’s Legal Shield, Section 230, claiming social media companies were biased against conservatives.
Trump is not the only person permanently suspended after the deadly attempted insurrection in the U.S. Capitol. Twitter also removed several accounts that advanced QAnon’s conspiracy theories, including Sidney Powell, Mike Flynn, and former 8kun administrator Ron Watkins.
